STAR-CCM+ license server troubleshooting guide

STAR-CCM+ License Server Troubleshooting Guide

Troubleshooting Steps

A common issue when installing and setting up STAR-CCM+ is connecting to the license server. Please check the following items when troubleshooting:
  1. Verify your license file is configured correctly, as discussed in this article Installing your STAR-CCM+ license for the first time.
  2. Check if the license server is running. If it isn't, start the license server.
  3. Check the license server log file to find out if the license and features are being read correctly.
  4. Check the following environment variables:
    1. SALT_LICENSE_FILE = server_port@host_name
    2. CDLMD_LICENSE_FILE = server_port@host_name
    3. LM_LICENSE_FILE = server_port@host_name
    4. The server port number and host name used must be the same as specified in the license file.
  5. WINDOWS: In the Registry Editor, check the values of registry entries under HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > FLEXlm License Manager
  6. LINUX: Set CDLMD_LICENSE_FILE in  .flexlmrc file in your home directory, as define in step 4.
  7. If all the previous steps have been performed correctly, check permissions in the system firewall and security software.

Controlled Experiment

If the first set of troubleshooting steps fails, then please conduct the following experiment:
  1.  Close any open simulations
  2. Restart the license server again to clear the logs
  3. Open a star-ccm+ job on the client machine without using the -power option,
  4. Report which license is checked out from the server and quantity checked out by looking at the output bar in STAR-CCM+ and confirming by running a status inquiry (or lmstat in linux) on the license server.
  5. Close the session by exiting the simulation in the GUI. Confirm by looking at task manager or (or running ps -ef | grep star-ccm+ in linux)
  6. Open a single serial process on one core but now using the -power option. Repeat steps 4 and 5.
  7. Open a parallel process on two cores on one node using -np 2 and -power options. Repeat steps 4 and 5.
  8. Open a parallel process on multiple cores on multiple nodes if desired using normal job submission process. Report the command line used to launch STAR-CCM+ in this instance. Repeat steps 4 and 5.
  9. Report any failures and send us the license manager log files.
